Introduction
[D]AVY, [P]HIL, [B]RIAN, & [S]KYLER
D: Everyone’s haughty lumineth are back, and they brought their Aetherquartz. Will that be enough for them to hold their own in the fiery pits of Embergard? Let’s take a look.
WARSCROLl
S: Translated straight over from their 1st Ed version. This inspire is nail-biting, heart pounding, and quite frankly a blast. From Myari trying to inspire off a single-die R2 attack, to Bahannar hoping you attack him, to Ailenn's prowess with a sword - it's great stuff!
P: Big on fun, big on random! As Skyler says there are ways to try and manipulate this with fewer dice or having more facings be successful. This can be a frustrating style of inspiring so I say just lean into it.
S: This got even better! (Previously only 1 die.) "Any" really ramps up the risk/reward considerations and will create some big, exciting moments. With their entire warscroll being wrapped up in the value of aetherquartz, it feels a worthy update to me.
P: Love this design. Big reward but potentially big risk by giving up the passive abilities!
S: Love the wording here, as it ensures you get to retain the +1 Save during the turn you spend your aetherquartz. I think having a soft-value of 2-Dodge with a full re-roll available to you is a pretty solid deal. If you can get him to 2-Dodge through an upgrade, you can also shake the stress of going down to 1-Dodge and just think of the quartz as a re-roll from that moment forward.
P: Or if stacking the plus save feels reliable just ride that and dodge your way to victory.
S: The living mountain!! My favorite update to the warband. The absolute rock that Bahannar is - cannot be driven back, overrun, or pushed around by any enemy means! This is a key component of the Take & Hold side of their Flex identity.
P: Such an annoying thing to have to deal with. It doesn't always feel like much on paper but then you get into a game and really need him off that feature and there is only one way to do it.
S: Brutal is a nice touch as it means she can make a ranged shot despite enemies being adjacent to her. Narratively speaking I feel it really shows off her finesse as an archer. And having some access to Ensnare can be a nice bonus too. Senaela may have the weakest offering all around from Aetherquartz, but what could be spicy down the line is that it works with any ranged weapon given to her.
P: That is a good catch. Weapons are not super prevalent yet but we will likely see more. And if nothing else, a lot of take and hold warbands have multiple dodge so having someone who can pick away at those fighters with ensnare should help out a good amount.
S: Speaking of narrative flare! This is where her prowess with a blade comes through, she's such a good swordsman that you may as well be flanked when crossing swords with her. Super cool, and works great with their inspire condition.
P: By being so naturally accurate I'd be inclined to try and get her some extra damage to really capitalize on every swing.
FIGHTERS
Uninspired
P: An interesting leader profile. The health and move make perfect sense for an elfy boy, but 1 dodge feels out of place until we remember that his aetherquarz ability is adding 1 save all the time. The weapons are odd, but I think he has a 1 dice attack to try and trigger inspire.
Inspired
P: If you do manage that inspire the added accuracy will definitely help get Myari doing work!
Uninspired
P: Paired with his aetherquartz ability makes a solid fighter for holding treasure. Pretty average weapons but we are hoping that 1 save dice helps trigger the inspire.
Inspired
P: Oh yeah, there is that 2 save! Add extra damage from grievous and you are really wanting this guy inspired.
Uninspired
P: Ailenn, is solid if unspectacular. Her aetherquartz ability makes her very accurate so definitely plan on some upgrades going her way. Because of her attack accuracy she should be pretty easy to inspire.
Inspired
P: Wow, an extra attack dice and cleave! That almost feels excessive, but with a damage boost she should be able to start carving through the enemy warband.
Uninspired
D: Senaela with not great accuracy, but some nice range. Gives her a chance to make things happen while getting on features if that's your thing.
P: Although, having cleave and ensnare at all times with an aetherquartz token should make that bow more reliable. The 1 dodge and 3 health is a little worrisome though.
Inspired
D: Quite the ranged attack. Still very fragile with one dodge and three health. But that's top tier range.
P: Beyond top even. Range 5 is the longest range we have ever seen. Should allow Senaela to be a very annoying back line treasure holder.
Summary
D: A real toolbox of a warband. Static boosts so long as you’re holding Aetherquartz. There’s fun moments to decide when it’s worth it to pull the trigger on the re-roll, offensively, or to hang on to it for that crucial defensive re-roll. The elf players in our local are rejoicing, and I think for good reason.
