Cogfort E44D - Freeguild Guard
Description
The Freeguild Guard are the true cogs in the machine, filled with any humans that want to fight in the name of Azyr or their home city. Their ranks are filled with fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters (with older soldiers retiring to the Handgunners units to be discussed in another post). The CogGuard of E44D fight at the front of the army, often suffering the most damage from enemies, often sacrificing their limbs and lives to protect the Cogfort. Lucky for them (is it?) prosthetic limbs allow wounded soldiers to wield swords and shield almost better than they could before. This haggard unit will always rise to the challenge if supported well.
Build + Paint
I came into a ton of Skitarii Rangers when Kill Team launched in the 2018. I had some Freeguild guard models from a Morheim campaign I joined in 2015 I think - so I had a ton of heads lying around.
What kits are used in this unit:
Adeptus Mechanicus Skitarii Rangers - Body
Adeptus Mechanicus Sicarian Rustalkers - Prosthetic Swords
Cities of Sigmar Freeguild Guard - heads
Small plastic cog/gears from Amazon.
The rusted & oxidized armor becomes very prominent on these bodies, but there is a lot of cloth to break it up. I tried a few different looks on coats, but given the number of guard that a Cogfort has to equip, they’re gong to give them plain leather coats. Most CogGuard soldiers decorate their coats because they get passed on to the guard person who replaces them after they die.
Storyphase
Sen takes the pack of rations wrapped in his new guard coat that has 12 patches adorning the top. Looking around he sees an open spot on a mossy rock next to another new guard recruit.
Sen asks, “This spot open?”
The other guard recruit looks up and nods with an uneasy smile, she seems about his age.
“Thanks,” Sen replies.
Sen takes the seat and notices that the woman’s guard coat is spread across her lap, sewing the last few stitches onto a patch.
Sen asks, “Repairing one of the patches?”
Woman, “No, I’m putting my patch on.”
Sen cocks his head to the side, “Already? We just got them. Don’t you want to wear it in, get a few stories under your belt first before you add your patch?”
She frowns a bit and shakes her head, “There’s no promise that there’ll be a story for us? Get your patch on today cuz it may be on someone else’s back tomorrow. With the patch on all future deeds will honor your name and provide resources to your family back home.”
Sen sits in silence for a moment before unpacking the bundle and draping the coat over his own lap. He reaches into his own belongings and pulls out a circular patch that was given to him by his Aunt for just this exact reason.
On the patch is a modest family crest of a possum walking across the top of a half colored shield. Below the shield is the surname Tadie in capital letters arching with the curve of the patch’s edge. He pulls out the needle and thread from the bundle he was issued, and begins to sew his patch on the coat next to the 12 that came before.
